Legacy of Colonization

What is Colonization?

Colonization is the expansion of nations through the establishment of colonies.   Colonization in Africa started in 1876 when the Scramble for Africa started.  Nations like France, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, and Britain.

Why does it matter?

Colonization has ruined the continent.  Through colonzation, they've desroyed tribes and ruined culures.  Colonization has inflicted wars, raciam, and many other conflicts that effect the world today.

During this project, we looked at early colonization and how it still affects the world today.  Colonization is what is fueling many conflicts today.  It fuels the rebelion in Sierra Leone, like I read in A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, just to name one.  When colonization started, Social Darwinism was introduced widely throughout the world.  Social Darwinism by definition is

¨. . .the theory that individuals, groups, and peoples are subject to the same          Darwinian lows of natural selection as plants and animals.  Now largely discredited, social Darwinism was advocated by Herbet Spencer and others in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was used to justify political conservatism, imperialiam, and racism and to discourage intervention and reform.¨ (google)

This project helped me to realize how many of the world's current conflicts were caused in 1881 when the Scramble for Africa started.  I especially learned that all actions results in some sort of consequence.  This project helped me to think about my actions and what consequences my happen as a result no matter how small.
