A Long Way Gone

During this project, I read A Long Way Gone By Ishmael Beah.  This book really focused on the long term effects of colonization on Africa.  A Long Way Gone  takes place in Sierra Leone during the late 1900's.  During this time, a taxing war is happening in this country.  Throughout the book, you follow a young boy who ultimately is forced to become a child soldier.

This book was really hard for me to read.  The author was really straight up when it came to he killing and their brutality.  It was a real eye opener.  This book helped me to realize the truth about the problems going on in Africa.

Below is my drawing artifact for A Long Way Gone.  It represents the conflicts of the story through sybolism.

The child in the tree represents Ishmael reflecting on all the events he has experienced so far.  Each ghost in the sky symbolizes one of his friends or family members that he has lost on his journey.  The soldiers on the ground represents the Rebels that are hunting Ishmael down to convert him into a child soldier.  The tipis in the background symbolizes the many villages that have been burnt down by Rebels in the story.  Lastly, the tree represents Ishmael's safe haven, the place where he can rest with less worries.
